YAKIMA, Wash. — Marcus Schooley literally climbed to the top of Yakima high school pole vaulting on Saturday.
The Davis senior cleared 15 feet, 3 inches to break a 16-year-old school record and establish a new Valley all-time record at the 85th annual Davis Invitational at Zaepfel Stadium.
Riverside Christian’s Derek Byrne captured the javelin (190-7) and long jump (21-0) and placed second in the 110 hurdles (15.12) in the 17-team meet.
Schooley, who led four other local vaulters over 13-0, topped Davis’ previous record of 15-11?2 set in 1995 by James Gardner.
In the girls meet, Eisenhower swept the throwing events with Ewieona Williams (shot), Claire Goins (discus) and Brooke Brown (javelin).
• Zillah’s boys and Naches Valley’s girls won the team titles in Royal’s 16-team Ron Vanderholm Invitational. Zillah’s Logan Olney won the 100 and 200 and helped the Leopards win the 4×100 and 4×400, and NV’s Kelsie Taylor and Kelly Snyder were double winners in the field events.
• West Valley’s girls 4×200 team of Mikele Cluff, Ashley Packard, Lindsay Burns and Chantel Jaeger clocked 1:45.97 at Southridge’s Fast Times Invitational. Jaeger also won the 100 and 200.
• Eisenhower’s Timothy Cummings and Mayra Chavez clocked 4:22.00 and 5:13.81, respectively, in mile races at the Arcadia Invitational in California.
